Veteran Flyers forward Coltyn Bates has found a new home for next season as the graduating centre has accepted a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

The pride of Brandon, Manitoba saw his point totals increase significantly from one year to the next during his three years in Winkler and is coming off his best season in an Orange and Black uniform.

“I would like to give a huge thank you to the whole Flyers organization from the fans, players, coaches, the community, and especially my billet family for helping me become the person and player I am today,” said Bates.

“It was special to be a part of the Flyers organization from the start to finish and I will be forever thankful for the opportunity I was given. I’m excited to announce my commitment to further my playing career and education at the University of Wisconsin-Superior next season.”

After being drafted by the Flyers in the 2012 MJHL Bantam Draft, Bates spent three years in Winkler recording 145 points (47 Goals – 98 Assists) in 176 regular season games. He also added 21 points (7 Goals – 14 Assists) in 29 playoff games. His best season came this past year when he recorded 65 points in 52 games played.

Not only was Bates a valuable member of the Flyers on the ice, but his community involvement in the schools and minor hockey programs made him an important member off the ice as well.

Earlier this off season, graduating Winkler forward Will Blake also committed to the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the two will now join former Flyers captain Connor Hamonic on the Yellowjackets roster.

The Flyers would like to congratulate Coltyn on his decision to continue his education and hockey career at UWS.
