The Border Baseball League has added a ninth team for the 2019 season.

The Altona Bisons will join the Morden Mohawks, Winkler Whips, Carman Cardinals, Pilot Mound Pilots, Cartwright Twins, Clearwater, the Killarney Lakers and defending champion Balur Regals after the teams application was accepted at the league's spring meeting Sunday in Clearwater.

"I think it's great," said Border president Darren Russell on the addition of the Bisons. "We got a community and a group of people that want to play baseball. We were all very welcoming to the Altona franchise. It was a unanimous vote in favour of them joining our league. They've got beautiful facilities and they got a group of people that want to play ball so who are we to stand in their way. They seem very well organized and everyone is very upbeat about it."

The Bisons are the second team to join the league in as many years.

Carman put a team on the diamond in 2018.

The 2019 season will consist of a 16-game schedule with each team playing a home-and-home against the other eight teams.

All nine teams make the playoffs.

The 8th and 9th place teams will meet in a one-game showdown to determine who advances to the quarterfinals.

The 2019 regular season schedule is expected to begin after the Victoria Day long weekend in May.
