The Carman Goldeyes, who won four consecutive Manitoba Junior Baseball League titles from 1971-1974 and the 1993-2000 Morden Mohawks will be inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in June of 2018.

The 1987-92 Mohawks were inducted in 2008 and the teams from 1993-2000 will join them in the Hall.

Morden won the Border League championship 11 straight years and for 13 of 14 years beginning in 1987.

The Mohawks ran the table in 1994.

Morden went 24-0 in regular season and league playoffs which earned them the Manitoba Baseball Team of the Year award.

Mark Thiessen played centre field for the Mohawks and said manager Joe Wiwchar deserves all the credit for their success.

"He was the glue to everything, keeping it altogether with fundraising or even going to meetings and stuff like that," explained Thiessen. "We were just young kids trying to have fun and he really kept us in line and he taught us how to play baseball too. We can't forget that. He was the pillar of our group."

Two sets of Carman Goldeyes teams are already in the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame.

Carman captured six consecutive Red Boine Senior Baseball League championships from 1983-88 and those teams were inducted into the Hall in 2002.

In 2004 the '69 Goldeyes team that won the Manitoba Junior Baseball League title and brought home silver medals from the Nationals were added to Hall of Fame.

Now the Carman teams that captured the MJBL championships in 1971, 72, 73 & 74 will be inducted.

"This team was a little bit different than the later teams," noted Brian Hodgson who played on those Goldeyes championship teams. "This team was more of a community team. We had guys from Plum Coulee, guys from Morden, we had guys from Snowflake, Miami, Roland - it was an area team and I think that's what makes it more special."

The 1999-2008 Brandon Marlins and the 1974-79 Warren Seniors will also be inducted in the Hall of Fame.

Eight individuals are going into the Hall and they include Winnipeg Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier, Faron Asham of Brandon, Troy Fortin of Lundar, Doug Freeth of Winnipeg, Terry Mayert of Reston, Trevor Proctor of Woodlands, Ron Shewchuk of Minnedosa and Jason Mateychuk of Dominion City.

Mateychuk, who is the principal at Roseau Valley School in Dominion City, had an outstanding junior career in the MJBL with the Elmwood Giants from 1987-1992. The Zhoda native had a four a four-year career at Mayville State and was All-Conference in 1993. Mateychuk was a player-coach with the Franklin Border Kings of the Border East Baseball League and now gives back to the game as a coach, executive and clinician.

"It's very humbling," said Mateychuk on being selected to the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. "There's a lot of great players and people who are in the Hall of Fame and there's a lot who aren't there yet. It's just humbling to know that you've done some good things on the field over the years that people notice you in this way."

The 22nd Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will be held June 2nd, 2018 at the Morden Event Access Centre which is the home of the Hall of Fame.
