The South Central Hurricanes season came to a close yesterday in Winkler after suffering a 2-1 loss to the California Raisins.

"We definitely were the better team. We had 75-80% of possession in their end. We had countless shots on net. That's a testament to their keeper," said Hurricanes coach Jen Martens. "We didn't have our regular keeper. The girls we substituted in did very well. Basically, they got two very well placed shots on net. It ended up that their two shots ended up going in the net, which is unfortunate. Too bad, one more of our countless shots didn't go in."

The Raisins scored in the first half and early in the second half to go up 2-0 before Hurricanes Amber Wiebe broke the Raisins shutout in the 45th minute.

The Hurricanes will finish in third place in the second division with a 9-5-4 record.

"I don't think the fourth place can catch us," explained Martens. "The team in first place was a dissolved premier team, so they clearly play like a Premier division team, which is why they're destroying everybody. Synergy, who is in second place is a new team in the league that has been marching their way up the ranks. This was just their year to be in the second division, but they are clearly a first or premier division team as well. For us to finish third that's fine. I'm hoping next year they can both move up and the following year will be our chance to move up to the first division."

This game was also bitter sweet for Martens as of the end of the season it's her plan to step away from the team after fifteen years of playing and coaching with the South Central Hurricanes.
