Four years ago the Provinces best youth athletes converged in Morden, Winkler, and the RM of Stanley for the Manitoba Winter Games.

With March on the horizon, anticipation is growing throughout the South Region.

"It's four months away," said Leanne Traynor Regional Sports Development Officer for the south region. "I'm personally looking forward to it and I hope everyone else is too."

As the games rapidly approach, try-outs are already underway and you can find try-out dates by visiting the game's website.

Traynor says the Central Region has been renamed 'South Region'.

"Now we have the old central boundaries pretty much. Plus everything south of Highway 1, east of Highway 75," said Traynor.

With the boundaries changing, Sport Manitoba has cut a number of regions down from seven, which included Norman, Parkland, Interlake, Eastman, Westman, Central and Winnipeg to only five, North, East, South, West, and Winnipeg.

Based on feedback collected during the 2014 Rural Review, Sport Manitoba evaluated the regional staffing structure to better meet the needs of regional sport development. It was clear that more direct programming for coaches and athletes was the biggest area of support review participants suggested.

"Most sports will have six regional teams. There will be the odd sport where they are allowed to bring additional teams," said Traynor.

She continued to say, for the South region will have double the curling and double the hockey teams entered into the games.
