The Morden Redskins and Warren Mercs are going the distance.

Trent Genyk scored his second goal of the game on the power play 2:27 into overtime to lift the Mercs past the Redskins 5-4 Sunday night in Morden.

The best-of-seven South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League final is tied at three games a piece.

"We knew what we had to do coming in," said Genyk whose shorthanded goal at 11:17 of the third period gave the vistors a 4-3 lead. "We were missing a few key guys tonight but hockey is a funny game. When you're missing your key guys, other guys tend to step up and we just had a good overall team effort today. That was what we needed to do."

Kyle Lundale, Travis Bobbee and Brenden Luschinski also scored for the Mercs who trailed 3-1 after the first period and 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Luschinski, who potted his ninth goal of the playoffs just over two minutes into the third period which tied game six at 3-3, knew they were going to bring the series back to Warren.

"Down 3-1 I never had any doubt," said Luschinksi. "This team battles right to the end. We've been here twice and played one-goal games. I knew we were coming back. I knew it."

Jordan Cameron, Mike Rey, David Victor and Tyler Grove replied for the Redskins.

"It's obviously disappointing," said Morden coach Mark Thiessen. "We had a 3-1 lead after one period and just the way the game went, some of the calls we really weren't happy with but that's part of the game."

Grove scored the tying goal on the power play at 10:42 of the third period.

The Redskins had a golden opportunity to win their 13th SEMHL championship late in regulation.

Mercs forward Brock Genyk took a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct but the Morden couldn't put the puck past Mercs netminder Alcide Grenier.

Grenier made 24 saves in relief of starter Bryce Spittal who allowed three goals on 13 shots in the first period.

The deciding seventh game goes Tuesday (8 p.m.) in Warren.

"It's everything on deck," said coach Thiessen. "How many guys get to say they played in a game seven? It doesn't happen very often. To do that for a league championship, we're looking forward to it."
