Tanner Bergman pitched a complete game, two hitter, as the Morden Mohawks dumped the defending champion Pilot Mound Pilots 6-1 in game one of the Border West Baseball League's best-of-five final.

"Honestly I thought it was all on my defence. I got some ground balls for them. It wasn't phenomenal pitching, but it was our defence that won the game for us," explained Bergman.

Morden scored at least a run in each inning except in the first and last.

The Mohawks got on the sticks first in the second when Steve Mullin came around to score after being walked by Pilots starter Tyson McConnell.

In the second the Mohawks would tally, with Jesse Mutcheson singling his way on base then working his way around the pillows and eventually scoring.

Robi Lewarne scored the only run for the Pilots after being hit by a pitch in the bottom half of the third and the home Pilots trailed 2-1 after two complete.

Meanwhile in the third Bergman, who got the win on the bump, helped his own cause by being the teams third run.

Morden sent seven batters to the dish in the fifth with two coming across the plate and it was 5-1.

"We had a slow start there and couldn't really get the bats going there. We had a couple of opportunities early in the game to score some runners and get ourselves back in it," said McConnell. "We just never came up with those big hits when we needed them and got behind early."

The Mohawks would tack on another run in the sixth for a 6-1 lead.

"It's huge for sure. Especially in a five game series. One game is a big momentum swing for sure. It's far from over, but we like where we are right now," explained Jesse when asked how big a game one victory is.

McConnell pitched five innings for Pilot Mound giving up five earned runs on eight hits and struck out a pair. Anthony Friesen came in to pitch the sixth and gave up one run on three hits. Brett Pinkerton finished the game for the Pilots in the seventh, allowing a hit and a walk.

Game two of this series goes Thursday night at Buhler Park in Morden with first pitch at 6:30 p.m.

"We just have to stick to our game and get the bats rolling a bit and get a good start we are in the game early," concluded McConnell.
