The Pembina Valley was well represented at the 2017 Canada Summer Games hosted in Winnipeg August July 28th to August 13th.

Manitoba captured a record amount of medals during the Games with 42. Manitoba finished in 6th place with 10 gold, 15 silver, and 17 bronze.

Kyle Dyck and Tristan Peters, both from Winkler, were on the men's baseball team, who were perfect throughout the round robin games going 5-0.

"It was an unreal experience. No one expected us to have a chance at a medal. When we just kept winning games, just the thought of getting a medal came into our minds and it became a reality at the end," said Dyck, who pitched for Team Manitoba.

Manitoba defeated Nova Scotia 11-1 to kick off their round robin, then beat Newfoundland and Labrador 5-2, after which Manitoba shut out New Brunswick 5-0, edged Prince Edward Island 10-4, and finished it off with a thrilling 3-2 win over Ontario to clinch first place in Group B.

With first place came a bye into the semifinals where Manitoba took down the top seeded team in Group A, Alberta 1-0. Meanwhile in the other semifinal Saskatchewan shutout Ontario 7-0.

In the championship game, Manitoba fell 3-1 to Saskatchewan and brought home silver, which is the best finish by any baseball team from our province at the Canada Summer Games.

"I love it. It was amazing. I thought we were going to get bronze at most. I didn't really expect to make the semi's, but our team really came together," said Peters who was at shortstop. "I think it was because of the three years we had our team together. It really got us to bond more than other teams did. That just gave us an edge on other teams."

Another Pembina Valley athlete was able to come home from the national tournament with some hardware. Talia Peters and the rest of her basketball team captured bronze.

"It was really fun. I enjoyed the whole thing. There was always something to do. It was a little over whelming, because it doesn't really hit you until you're there, but there is people from all over Canada there," said Talia Peters.

The female basketball team went 1 and 1 in the round robin, beating Saskatchewan 61-56 and losing 70-60 to Ontario.

Manitoba finished second in Group "A" behind Quebec and received a berth into the quarterfinals, where Manitoba bounced past New Brunswick 71-68. With this win off to the semifinals they went. Manitoba fell 84-59 to Ontario and would play for bronze against Alberta, who lost 83-61 to Quebec.

Manitoba trumped Alberta 76-63 to be the third best team in Canada.

"We were all so excited and we accomplished our goal to win a medal," explained Peters.
