The Esso Cup is only 18 days away and the Pembina Valley Hawks are back on the ice after spring break preparing to Host the national championship.

So far there are a number of other representatives who are ready to come to Morden for a chance to hoist the Esso Cup.

The Mid-Isle Wildcats will represent the Atlantic region, while the St. Albert Slash will be the Pacific Region team, and the Prince Albert Bears advanced to the Esso Cup as team West after beating the Westman Wildcats in two straight games.

This means teams Quebec and Ontario have yet to qualify a team for the tournament but will do so in the near future.

"We are actually getting quite close to puck drop and things are coming together quite nicely. We are going to have some teams qualify this weekend (March 31st - April 2nd). This is great because they will be able to start promoting it in their communities and within the community of Morden as well," explained Hockey Canada's Coordinator in the events and properties department Angelynn Bland. "We've had a few pageantry items go up within the Access Event Centre to start generating the hype. We have a great host committee and a long list of volunteers. We are looking forward to puck drop."

As this is a Hockey Canada event the host committee has been working diligently together to make sure this event goes off without a hitch.

"I think there's actually a lot of excitement with the program right now. Just knowing that we are approaching the tenth year, next year. We are starting to build a lot of that history with the Esso Cup. We are getting some players out of the program that are now a part of our development team and are also moving onto our national team. It's exciting to see the players move up the ranks," said Hockey Canada's manager of events and properties Anne-Marie Murphy. "We are really excited to be hosting it in Manitoba this year. The Esso Cup is fairly young and we've been able to have it in many different communities across Canada and next year is no different with it going to Nova Scotia. We are spreading ourselves all over the place now."

Nearing a decade of Esso Cup tournaments the Esso Cup has grown and has become the goal for each female midget hockey team in the country at the start of every year.

As this is Morden's first go around with hosting a Hockey Canada event it's nice for the host committee and Hockey Canada to have a good working relationship along the way.

"We've worked well together and are striving to make the Esso Cup as successful and fun for the players, attendees and the volunteers. I think we've been working really well together," said Murphy.

Tickets packages can be purchased at the Access Event Centre during regular business hours, or on Hockey Canada's website. Packages are $60 for the entire week for regular seating and $80 for inside seating.

The Esso Cup will take place April 23rd to 29th at the Access Event Centre in Morden.
