Matthew Thiessen, who backstopped the Steinbach Pistons to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League championship and the ANAVET Cup, was selected in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks.

The 18-year-old Altona native recorded a 2.06 goals against average and a .923 save percentage in 34 regular season games with the Pistons and had 1.60 GAA in the MJHL post-season.

Thiessen, who has committed to play for the University of Maine Black Bears, was one of seven Manitobans selected on Saturday in Dallas.

Defenseman Jet Woo of Winnipeg went to Vancouver and blueliner Calen Addison of Brandon was picked by the Pittsburgh Penguins in round two.

Centremen Connor Dewar of Gilbert Plains was chosen by the Minnesota Wild in round three.

Goaltender Joel Hofer of Winnipeg went to the St. Louis Blues in round four.

The Dallas Stars selected defenseman Dawson Barteaux of Foxwarren in round six and also took forward Jermaine Loewen of Arborg in round seven.
