Tanner Boyle hit a grand slam and a two-run home run en route to the Portage Collegiate Trojans capturing the 2017 Provincial High School Baseball Championship in Altona with a 17-3 win over the Boissevain Broncos.

"I was just seeing the ball well today and putting good swings on it," said Boyle. "I just wanted to help the boys win the championship."

This marked the first provincial baseball championship for Portage Collegiate Institute.

After a scoreless first inning, the Trojans' bats came alive and scored five in the second, four of which were on Boyle's grand slam. They then scored five more in the third, with another seven in the fourth, including a two-run shot by Boyle for his second home run of the game.

"It's pretty special. You dream of coming to things like this and to get it done this year it's really exciting. It's super surreal," said Trojans third base Brody Moffatt. "Most people don't get to come to provincial championships. Our bats were going and our pitching was on today and everything just came together."

Meanwhile, the Broncos would tally their three runs with a solo blast by Jared McCorrister in the top of the fourth and would shorten the Trojans lead by two more in their half of the fifth.

"It felt great off the bat that's for sure," said McCorrister. "I knew with the wind carrying it I thought there was a good chance for it to leave the park and it did."

The Broncos' gave the start to AJ Strain, who gave up five runs on four hits while walking three and striking out one. Kyle Hole came on in relief of Strain and gave up 12 runs on 10 hits, and walked five. Portage's Joey Moffat pitched a complete game four-hitter while, allowing three runs, walking two and struck out six.

"I just went right after batters and left one up in the zone there. The guy took me yard, but I bounced back pretty good and shut them down," said Joey.

This was a bit of redemption for the Trojans who lost in last year's final to the Dauphin Clippers, who fell 10-4 to the Broncos' in this year's semifinals.

Tournament MVP honours went to Boyle of the champion Trojans.

Also, the host W.C. Miller Aces dropped their quarterfinal game 9-1 to the Clippers Friday.
