The Winkler Whips weathered the Baldur Regals sixth inning rally as they won 5-2 Tuesday night in Winkler.

"It was a scratch and claw type of game. 3-0 against a team like Baldur, you know they are going to keep coming after it," said Winkler manager Jeremy Matuszewski. "They make it 3-2 in the sixth and the boys answered. We got two in the bottom of the sixth to give us a bit of a cushion and then Noah (Olfert) was lights out".

After a pair of scoreless innings, Bill Fehr was able to come around and score to put Winkler up 1-0 after three. The Whips would score two more in the fourth when Jamie Fehr and Nic Friesen (pinch runner for Matuszewski) crossed the plate.

Moving ahead to the sixth inning Baldur got on the sticks and six runners to the plate, three of them reaching base, and two coming around to score. This brought the visiting Regals within one heading into the bottom of the sixth.

"They came out good. They have some good players. We had some troubles with some ground balls in the field and that kind of cost us there," explained Regals first base Chris Reykdal. "Our pitcher threw well for us and got us out of a few jams. It's just the way baseball goes sometimes. We got a few hits, but not timely ones and couldn't get things going."

In the Whips half of the sixth, they would pad their lead by two.

John Elias got the start on the bump for the Whips and pitched five innings of shutout ball. During those five innings, he gave up four hits, walked one, and struck out three. Abe Friesen came in relief for the sixth inning and allowed two runs to score on two hits. Then Noah Olfert closed out the game for the Whips and retired all three batters he faced to secure the win.

Meanwhile, Jordan Wickens pitched the entire game for the Regals and allowed five runs on four hits, and struck out five along the way.

Both of these two teams will be back on the diamond Friday. The Regals will head Cartwright, while the Whips will face Clearwater.
