Twelve-year-old Michael Steppler of the Miami 4-H beef club, alongside his 18-month-old steer named Steve, won 2017 grand champion steer at the Carman Country Fair this past weekend.

Steppler, who comes from a family of 4-H participants, said he first joined the club when his mom signed him up five years ago. He explains how he and Steve got to this point.

“I picked my steer in October, and then I worked probably six hours a week on him ... I practiced leading him around in the barn, and comb him and stuff like that,” he said.

Now that the fair is over, Steppler said Steve will go to his new owner to be slaughtered.
