There will be new seating behind home plate when the baseball season starts at Access Field in Altona this spring.

The bleachers will have a rather nostalgic feel to them for many sports fans. That's because the chairs were once part of the old Winnipeg Blue Bomber Stadium. In fact, before that facility was torn down in 2013, the committee spearheading the Access Field project managed to purchase about 200 of those seats for their ball park.

Committee spokesman Ken Wiebe says the chairs will definitely give the ball park a unique look, and is just one of a number of features that will make the diamond rather special in southern Manitoba.

"These bleachers are definitely part of phase two of this project. A scoreboard is also high on our agenda, including the other 120 seats and the installation of permanent lights, which would certainly change the way we play ball in this community."

A total of 80 seats will be installed behind home plate, attached to a steel structure that was manufactured by local Altona company Sunland Steel Works.
