The Altona and Rhineland Fire Department responded to a garage fire early Thursday morning west of Altona.

Fire chief Greg Zimmerman said the occupants of the home were not injured and were able to exit their home safely. Altona fire crews, 21 in total, removed two vehicles from the garage with only minor damage. The garage itself, however, was destroyed.

A cause has not been determined, but Zimmerman said it looks like an accident.

The homeowner had spent all winter improving the interior of the metal garage, but as of yet, there is no estimate on the cost to replace the structure.

"Fortunately the homeowners are ok," Zimmerman said.
