On Wednesday, Altona Fire Chief Greg Zimmerman met with Enbridge Pipelines representative Les Scott to accept a Safe Community Funding grant.

"Safety is our number one priority," Scott explained.

The Safe Community Funding grant started in 2002 and Scott said they've distributed about 8.5 million dollars across North America since then.

Zimmerman said the department feels lucky to receive the $10,000 grant.

"They've been great partners when it comes to community safety," Zimmerman said. "They work not only with our fire department but with other fire departments as well... and have funded many things over the years."

Zimmerman said the money will be very useful to the Altona Fire Department. "It definitely helps us out," he added.

"We're looking this year of upgrading some of our equipment and replacing some older equipment," he said.

The money will be put toward a portable water tank, a portable pump or generator, and new coveralls for the members.

Zimmerman explained a collapsible 3,000 gallon portable water tank will be useful in situations outside of town where fire hydrants aren't available.
