Construction for the new W.C. Miller Collegiate gym is underway, and is only about a month behind schedule.

Principal Angela Pilkington said students will use the old gym in September, until the new structure is complete.

"Right now we're talking about an October occupancy date. There was some work when they did the initial ground clearing, and we needed to do some underpinning in that corner of our building, so that slowed some things down. The construction crew has been keeping pace."

She added it's still unknown what the old gym will be used for in the future.

"The old gym will be used to start our year," said Pilkington. "At some point the division will weigh in on what they want that space used for."

Pilkington noted the new gym does not have a stage, and thinks the old space could be used for drama productions, or as a multipurpose space.

Currently crews are working on the roof for the new gym.

"Construction is moving along quite well, if you drive by the building it looks large, people have started see it take shape... the crane is on site and they're hoisting the trusses in," said Pilkington.

She looks forward to showing the community the new space once it's finished.
