A 22-year-old Altona man is facing theft and assault charges after an incident February 23.

On Friday, police were called to Triangle Oasis in Winkler in regards to a reported assault in progress.

After Winkler Police located the subject and detained him the motel owner advised police the accused had stolen a cordless nail gun.

Police located the nailer inside the man's backpack and arrested him for theft under $5,000. Police later learned the accused was also involved in a theft from a local electronic store, The Source.

To make matters worse, while in custody the man attempted to assault police officers, resulting in two counts of assaulting a police officer. He was remanded into custody and will appear in Provincial Court.

Below is the Winkler Police report for Feb. 12-25:

February 12 – Police received three separate reports from complainants who advised that their home, vehicle or driveway was egged sometime during the night. These incidents took place on Eagleview Bay, Chevy Drive and Southview Drive.

February 14 – While on patrol police observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed along Highway 32 and activated emergency lights in order to pull over the vehicle. The vehicle continued away from police at a high rate of speed until it came to an abrupt stop in the front yard of a nearby residence. The driver and passenger refused to exit the vehicle therefore police opened the door and immediately detected the odor of liquor emanating from inside the vehicle. The driver complied to a demand for a breath sample which resulted in a “Fail” reading. He was subsequently arrested for Drive Impaired and transported to the Winkler Police Service where he provided two additional breath samples of 140 mg% and 130 mg%. The 31 year old male, a resident of Niverville, was also arrested for Drive Over .08 and released once sober on a Promise to Appear with conditions. He was also issued a Notice and Order of Suspension or Disqualification for his driver’s license and a Notice of Seizure and Impoundment for his vehicle.

Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle on Main Street that had been parked at the reported location all evening with its lights on. Police attended and spoke with the driver who stated that he was not there for any specific reason and was just passing time. Police determined nothing criminal was taking place and advised the complainant everything was alright.

February 15 – Police were dispatched to a residence on Prairie View Drive regarding a noise complaint. Police learned the subjects of the complaint were watching a movie using speakers and were advised to keep the volume down. Cooperation was received from all parties.

February 16 – Police were advised of a chimney fire at a residence located on 11th Street. Police assisted the Winkler Fire Department with traffic control while the fire was being extinguished.

February 17 – Police received a noise complaint of loud music coming from a home on Prairie View Drive. Police attended and spoke with the home owners who agreed to turn down the music.

While conducting a traffic stop police noted the odor of liquor on the driver’s breath. The driver complied to a demand for a breath sample which resulted in a “Warn” reading. The 21 year old male’s driver’s license was suspended for 72 hours.

Shortly before 3:00 a.m. police were dispatched to Tim Horton’s regarding an intoxicated male inside the restaurant. Police spoke with the male and found him to be heavily intoxicated and unsteady on his feet. Police arrested the 29 year old male under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and transported him to the Winkler Police Service where he was lodged until sober.

February 18 – Dispatch received a report from a staff member of 7-Eleven advising of a fight in progress outside the store. While the complainant was on the phone with dispatch, one of the males involved in the fight entered the store and advised that he was play-fighting with his brother and apologized for scaring the staff member. Police attended the store and spoke with the complainant who confirmed that everything was fine.

February 19 – While conducting a traffic stop police noted a strong odour of marihuana emanating from inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a small amount of marihuana, which was destroyed. The 17 year old male was released with a warning and police also advised his parents of the incident.

Police received a report of a young male who attempted to sexually assault a young female approximately two weeks ago. This file is still under investigation.

A resident of Tanager Way reported that two or three males destroyed a snow fort his children made in the front yard, and the snow fort has been destroyed on several other occasions as well.

Police were advised that a resident of 7th Street South was receiving harassing phone calls from an unknown male asking the complainant to come outside, and when she advised she would not, he stated he would have to come inside her home. Police attended however no one suspicious was located.

February 20 – Police were dispatched to Shoppers Drug Mart regarding a theft involving two females who stole several electronic items and fled the scene in an awaiting vehicle. This file is still under investigation.

February 21 – A complaint was received from a resident of Pineridge Place regarding a male who threw ice at his dog as well as threatened to harm the dog. Police spoke with the male suspect and issued him a verbal warning. The male denied all allegations but assured police he will not harm the dog or cause any further conflict.

February 22 – A report of three suspicious males inside the Access Credit Union lobby was received shortly after 12:00 a.m. Police spoke with the males and learned that they were waiting for their paychecks to go through and nothing of a suspicious nature had occurred.

Police were dispatched to Rogers regarding a suspicious male, who was identified the following day as the below-mentioned accused, who had entered the store and was scaring customers as he was acting in a strange manner. Police attended however the male had departed the scene prior to police arrival. Staff members advised police that the male appeared to be high and had placed a phone in his pocket, but returned the phone after being confronted by store staff.

February 24 – Shortly after 5:00 a.m. a male attended the Winkler Police Service to turn himself in as he believed his ex-girlfriend was going to be submitting a complaint against him. Police noted the male to be nonsensical with slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and emanating the odor of liquor from his breath. Police arrested the 21 year old male under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and released him once sober.

Later the same day, police were dispatched to a residence on 4th Street South regarding the above-noted male and his girlfriend who were involved in a domestic dispute. Police learned that the intoxicated male attended the residence and began arguing with his ex-girlfriend. Police also learned that the male had assaulted his ex-girlfriend earlier in the morning, and was subsequently arrested for Assault. He was later released to a sober adult on a Promise to Appear with conditions.

Police were dispatched to Shoppers Drug Mart regarding a vehicle that had driven into one of the store’s windows. Police learned the 87 year old driver accidently put the car in “Drive”, and no charges were laid in this incident.

February 25 – At approximately 12:30 a.m. police were dispatched to a residence on Mountain Avenue regarding a male who assaulted his girlfriend. Police attended and spoke with the victim who advised that her boyfriend also destroyed several pieces of her property. Police arrested the 27 year old male for Assault Causing Bodily Harm and Mischief Under $5000, and he was later released to a sober adult on a Promise to Appear with conditions.

The owner of Fehrway Metals reported to police that copper wire was stolen from his scrap yard sometime during the night.
