Motorists in Altona will need to find a detour when navigating a section of 4th Street SW.

In a news release issued this morning, the town says a sewer main collapse along the street has forced them to close the section from Centre Avenue to the north entrance of Westwood Crescent until repairs to the line have been completed.

Crews are using sewer bypass lines located on Centre Avenue and drivers are asked to proceed along the street with caution to avoid damaging the lines or disrupting the flow of effluent.

According to the news release, residents of Westwood Crescent and Sunflower Crescent can expect service interruptions during the repair.

Additional pumps are being used to prevent the interruption of sewer services to residents in the area.

Workers are trying to repair the line as quickly as possible.

Classes at Ecole Elmwood School were closed today as a result of the sewer line breach.
