Altona town council has signed a letter of intent with a local Internet provider that will significantly improve Internet service in the community.

Valley Fiber will now begin work on constructing a fiber-to-home network that will service the community with some of the highest Internet speeds in Canada.

Mayor Melvin Klassen says they've been looking into various proposals on providing better Internet service to local citizens for the past few months.

"Valley Fiber has given us the best proposal we feel that we can offer to our citizens. What I like about this proposal is they intend to bring fiber right to your door and will be available to everyone in our community."

Valley Fiber would be responsible for maintaining the network. The town will invest money in the project to provide the necessary infrastructure for its own facilities like the Civic Centre and the Millennium Exhibition Centre.

Valley Fiber CEO Hank Wall explains the letter of intent means they can start work on the project immediately.

"We'll be starting right away. We're quite ambitious so we expect to set up a number of planning sessions here shortly and want to be digging into the ground in 2018 and want to finish the project by 2019."

Mayor Klassen says the exact amount of their investment and other details pertaining to the project will be released once everything has been finalized by council in the coming weeks.
