Gallery in the Park in Altona is officially open for the season.

On Thursday, the Spring Season Opening was held, for the 10th anniversary of the gallery.

Susie Fisher is the curator at Gallery In The Park and explained how she became involved with the gallery.

"I simply asked, I was looking for work in the Altona area and something that would suit my interests in art," said Fisher, who was appointed as curator shortly after joining the committee.

New this year are 7 Works On Loan from the Winnipeg Art Gallery, located in the main gallery. The upstairs gallery contains works by Buffalo Creek Artists.

"There's a lot of whimsy in this year's exhibits, which I quite enjoy," said Fisher.

Fisher invites people to come visit the gallery this summer.

"Galleries are places of sanctuary, and I think it's so beautiful to have a place open in Altona in the summer, with a beautiful park, where people can come for free and just take in something new, something that inspires."

The idea for Gallery In The Park was originally started by Friesens Corporation, said Altona Mayor Melvin Klassen.

"It was joint effort between the town and Friesens that really got it going, and then you had community support," said Klassen, who was part of the fundraising committee.

Melvin added Gallery In the Park is one of the places they make sure to take visitors, and people are always impressed with the establishment.

"Sunsets and Fire" by Steve Penner was selected by Gallery in the Park as its official 10th anniversary celebratory piece. A new sculpture was also added in the garden, called Tug of War.

The gallery's season runs from June 8 to August 5.
