It was another strong showing for the Red River Technical Vocational Area at the 2019 Skills Manitoba competition Thursday in Winnipeg. Eight students from high schools across the Pembina and Red River valleys showed off their skills in a variety of categories.
One of those competitors was Linda Wiebe, a grade 12 student from Garden Valley Collegiate. She's finishing up her final year in the Esthetics program at Northlands Parkway Collegiate.
When asked what she enjoys most about the program, she pointed to the skin portion of the curriculum as well as the client-relations aspect.
"It's really fulfilling to know that your clients leave being happy and confident in themselves."
For her part in the Job Skills contest, Wiebe demonstrated how to create a smokey-eye look with makeup. She ended up earning a silver medal in the competition.
Representing the Carpentry program at the competition was Peter Friesen of W.C. Miller Collegiate. He also earned a silver medal in his respective category which required competitors to build a dog house.
Rick Rempel instructs the Carpentry program and he feels competitions like this help students build confidence in their skills, as well as provide them with employment opportunities in the future.
The following competitors also earned medals at Thursday's contest:
Gold - Emmanuel Richter (Garden Valley Collegiate), Outdoor Power & Recreation Equipment
Richter will be representing Manitoba at the 25th Annual Skills Canada Competition in Halifax on May 27th to 30th.
