Winkler residents can soon upgrade their composting game with new compost bins coming in November.

While the city recently dispersed kitchen compost pails, officials say they were never meant to be left on the curb.

To help clear up the confusion, city hall will soon be offering 32-gallon compost bins for curbside pickup, every week, 12 months a year.

"So you take your kitchen scraps from your little bucket and you put them in these bins," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder explains.

The bins are heavily subsidized with a $20 fee and will be available for purchase at city hall in the coming weeks.

In total, the city has 1,080 bins on order but is prepared to order more.

Harder notes neighbours are also encouraged to share a bin, "it would be great to see the whole city participate."

Moving from bags to bins will also help prevent messes on the street, Harder says, as well as any potential rodent issues while reducing waste heading to the landfill.
