Border Land School Division officials have already updated the Division's tobacco/drugs and alcohol policy and procedures to specifically include marijuana.

The Cannabis Act was only passed last week but BLSD Superintendent Krista Curry said trustees and senior administrators anticipated the move earlier in the year and got to work establishing some rules.

Border Land School Division is taking the same approach that it does with alcohol, said Curry, noting that while it is legal to possess and consume at the age of 18 it is still illegal to come to school under the influence. The same goes for cannabis once it becomes legal in October, she added.

BLSD will be taking the same approach to cannabis in schools as it does with alcohol. Submitted photo.

"Even though cannabis will be legal and we may have people in our system who are of legal age (19), it is still against school division procedure to use, access, come under the influence on Division property and we just amended our procedures to include that."

Curry admitted that BLSD doesn't see a lot of students show up to school under the influence of alcohol, and therefore she is hopeful the new legislation won't bring an increase of incidents involving cannabis.

In the meantime, she said schools will be taking a proactive approach to educating students on the new law as well as cannabis use in general.
