Teams will be hurrying hard down the ice in Carman this weekend during the first-ever, two day Rob Findlay Memorial Bonspiel. Spokesperson Dean North says there's two draws Friday and four draws on Saturday followed by a dinner.

Rob Findlay was a local farmer near Sperling and was a passionate curler. "Probably one of the best curlers at our club, if not the best curler at our club," explained North. However a tragic situation took his life about one year ago. North adds Findlay was a very popular figure around town.

"He would volunteer his time at different events, he would represent us in different events, he competed in our leagues, he helped run our junior program, he was on the board of directors for the curling club...if we needed help with the ice he would help with the ice, if we needed help painting. Anything we ever needed out of him he was available and made his time available."

North adds this is why the community wanted to hold a bonspiel in Findlay's honour while also raising mental health awareness.

"Rob's wife, Crystal, used to be a director on our Chamber of Commerce, so when we knew Rob passed we knew we wanted to get involved with her and come up with an event to remember Rob and help her a little bit through the tough time and raise some money for mental health awareness."

Saturday's dinner will also feature a keynote speaker. Playing off the mental health theme, North says the crowd will hear from advocate Robb Nash.
