For more than 30 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winkler and Morden has invited people from the community to help them raise money to keep their mentorship programs running for children in the area.

The Bowl For Kids Sake event took place Saturday in Winkler where dozens of teams of bowlers gathered to have fun and support BBBS.

"We really hope people see the importance of our mission and the value in mentoring kids," said BBBS Executive Director, Michael Penner.

Mentorship, as BBBS espouses, is simply being a reliable friend to listen to the young person. Another big part of it is encouraging that young person and helping them become the person they're meant to be.

"Sometimes if [kids] struggle socially, that can hinder [them]," shared Penner. "Bullying is a big factor, we all hear about that a lot."

Penner added that some homes aren't conducive to growth of character.

"So having a stable, reliable person is a big help."

Alvina Reimer was that person for one young woman.

Reimer was requested specifically by this youth, and started mentoring her. Their time together wasn't filled with movies, games, or busy activity. This woman just wanted someone to talk to.

"Initially, this is not what I had wanted to do," Reimer said. "But, once I got involved, it was wonderful."

Now, Reimer's former little sister is married with two children, but the women remain friends thanks to the time they shared together over the years.

"You invest in a young life and you never know what difference you can make for somebody," said Reimer. "From a very young age, have an opportunity to influence them."
