Area councils remain frustrated about the newly passed Cannabis Act.

Martin Harder is a Central District director for the Association of Manitoba Municipalities. He said these concerns came up at the district meeting Wednesday in Manitou.

He explained the legislation is creating a double-standard."Federally they (the public) have the opportunity to grow marijuana, like plants per household, and provincially there's none," said Harder.  He is confident there will ultimately be a jurisdictional court battle. "It's not over yet, I'm sure there will be arguing going on in terms of jurisdiction and unfortunately that could have, or should have, been resolved beforehand."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday, one day after the Cannabis Act was approved by the Senate, that the legislation would take effect October 17, 2018.

The Cannabis Act has since received Royal Assent, making it law. Also getting the stamp of approval from Canada's Governor General is Bill C-46, a companion bill to C-45 which enforces stricter impaired driving laws.
