Residents in Altona may get a chance to vote on whether to allow the retail sale of cannabis in their community.

A local citizens group will submit a petition to the town today with close to 800 signatures of people who do not want legal marijuana sold in Altona.

That number of names on the petition is well above the 620 name threshold that was needed to initiate a plebiscite on the issue.

Group spokesperson Cindy Heppner says they canvassed only about a third of the town and received tremendous support for their cause.

Town officials will review the petition to make sure all the names on the list are residents of Altona and eligible to vote.

If approved, town council will have to set a date for a plebiscite on the issue in the near future.
