Engineers have deemed a pair of bridges in Carman safe for continued use.

Mayor Bob Mitchell says Council has been given the verbal 'okay' to keep open the Trestle Bridge near Boyne Lodge, noting there had been talk of closing the footbridge at one time. He explains the sidewalks have been fixed but more repairs are still needed. "That's pretty obvious if you go and have a look at it." Mitchell adds they are just waiting on a written report from the engineers outlining what exactly needs to be done.

Meantime, the 1st Street Bridge near Ryall Park has been reopened after floodwaters forced its closure this spring. Mitchell says it turns out the high water on the Boyne River pushed some piles from the previous bridge up about seven feet and against the timbers of the current bridge. The structure was then closed due to safety concerns around its integrity. He notes engineers have said the bridge remains safe to use and crews will cut the offending piles back down to water level this summer.
