Work to revitalize the downtown business district in Carman has already begun for the season.

On Tuesday, crews picked up where they left off in the fall after removing part of the inter-locking sidewalk and over a dozen ash trees.

Carman Bobcat & Excavating has been contracted to complete the sidewalks on 1st Street and 1st Avenue SW.

Deputy Mayor Brent Owen said new LED light standards have been installed and a portion of the sidewalks have already been poured.

As for what's left to do, Owen said Council has come up with a plan for the area.

"We've got new spots for the new trees going up, we've got planters going in, we've got banners going up on light standards and we've got the potted flowers to hang as well."

Meantime, new sidewalks will also be a part of the reconstructed PTH 13 through Carman.

Owen said Borland Construction is set to move in Tuesday and get started on the sidewalks and curbs on the west side of the road. He noted that crews will be working closely with the area business owners in order to limit disruptions and will likely work on half of the sidewalk at a time.

He added that crosswalks will be the next thing to go up along the busy highway that runs through town.
