The Snowflake border crossing is going to close about five hours earlier starting next week.

Canada Border Services is reducing the hours of operation at the border point from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting on Monday, November 26.

Pembina Municipality reeve Glenn Shiskoski says the adjustment in hours will have a definite impact on local ratepayers coming back to Canada from the U.S.

"It will affect ratepayers who are coming back after those hours, later on in the evening. Anytime there is a reduction in services it affects someone, but at this point I can't say for sure how bad. But it will affect ratepayers, there's no two ways about it."

Shiskoski said it's going to result in more driving time for local ratepayers trying to get across the border after 5 p.m., as they will now be forced to find one of the busier border points.

"They'd have to go either east or west to a border crossing that has longer hours. It'll just be time wasted to come north in order to go south."

Shiskoski said CBSA continues to reduce the hours of the smaller border crossings in Manitoba, which means there is always a possibility that they may eventually decide to just close them up for good.

CBSA is also reducing the hours of operation at the Piney, South Junction and Tolstoi ports of entry in the southeast part of the province.
