The community has led an outpouring of support for the families impacted by Sunday's two-vehicle accident.

The accident left many with serious injury, including two of the Muhanuzi family in critical condition; a mother and her 11-year-old son were transported by helicopter to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

So far, the campaign has raised approximately $20,000.

In a recent update, the Muhanuzi family expresses their gratitude for the support.

"Financial gifts have been very kind and received with thankfulness but your prayers on behalf of the family are what is desired the most... We are overwhelmed by your support as it is upholding us through this time of uncertainty."

Along with the two family members in intensive care, two others remain in the regular ward.

The Muhanuzi family arrived in Winkler in 2014 from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The father, Assani, was not involved in the crash.

Many were introduced to Assani and his family after their story was highlighted by the Winkler Community Foundation last year during the Pay It Forward campaign.

As a newcomer, Assani was overwhelmed by support from his colleagues and church community when first arriving in the country.

"I learned that the community of Winkler saw that we were new, and we had nothing, and we had people coming every day, bringing this, bringing that," Assani shared. "We couldn't believe it."

Without material things to give back, Assani began serving at Central Station Community Centre as a tangible way to say "thank you" to the community.

Another donation page has been set up for Pete and Lori Friesen who also sustained injuries in the crash.
