In the late 1990s, a group of Winkler residents shared the dream of one day seeing the downtown area of the city as a newly revitalized living space where people could gather and enjoy each other's company. Now, 20 years later, they can do just that.

Crocus Place, a residence and shopping centre along Main Street, celebrated two decades of existence Friday evening with live music, speeches from dignitaries, kids activities and a barbecue supper.

George Klassen, Board Chair, said the centre has become a focal point within the community.

“It's a gathering place for lots of young people in the parking lot and in the park. The celebrations on July 1st used to be celebrated right on the parking lot. There has been a lot of things happening right on that plot,” he said.

He noted that before the transformation, Main Street was full of old buildings and shops, which is what inspired the area's modification.

After seeing all the changes that have taken place since then, Klassen reflected on that eventful year.

“I think the most memorable moment was when we actually got to sign the agreement with so many businesses and individuals from the community... everybody coming together and saying, 'We're going to do this project,'” said Klassen.
