People may soon be able to receive a certificate for completing a hike down the Crow Wing Trail.

This 193 km long trail connects Winnipeg to Emerson as part of the Trans Canada Trail.

Murielle Bugera, president of the Crow Wing Trail Association, said this was one of the highlights discussed at the organization's recent annual general meeting.

"Our biggest thing, what we're working on right now, is a partnership with the Canadian Company of Pilgrims," said Bugera. "Basically they bring together people who have done the Camino trail in Spain, and those who are preparing to do it."

She added they're working on developing a training trail that people can use to train for a pilgrimage.

"The goal is that eventually people that do they entire trail, they get a certificate that they've done it all," Bugera explained.

Easier accessibility to the trail was also discussed at the meeting.

"We're in the process of finalizing our access points, so that it's easer for people to see how to access the Crow Wing Trail because it's off the beaten path."

Right now, there are only a couple areas of the trail that aren't connected the way Bugera would like.

"We're only got two more gaps to finish, so that's a huge accomplishment for us," said Bugera. "It's not as if there's a gap in the trail itself... we have to put in a pedestrian bridge to cross a creek."

Finally, Bugera said new maps have been created based on the trail's history.

"We also have developed some historical maps of the Crow Wing Trail, and it's based on the canoe route maps that were designed by the artist Réal Bérard, and those are for sale now," she added. "It gives you an overview of what was going on in the 1800's along the trail."
