A curler who has curled in 272 different venues in the course of 3 seasons will be curling at the Winkler Curling Club on Nov. 15.

Rob Swan is from a small community in New Brunswick. A few years ago he was made aware of the fact that his local curling facility in Harvey Station is in need of repair.

After a discussion with a friend, Swan decided to raise money by curling in rinks across the world. His full-time work schedule allows him to travel and work 3 weeks on and 2 weeks off, giving him an opportunity to curl in many different locations.

"We're a small community, we don't have a lot of financial resources to tap into," he said. Swan had the idea to ask for sponsorship while curling in different areas to raise awareness for his cause. "A buddy of mine said, 'You travel across Canada, so why not curl across Canada.'"

Swan said that this sparked the idea to curl in different countries and set goals for every season.

Swan says he makes new friends at every curling club

At first his plans were set back due to a cancer diagnosis and treatments. However, Swan said after 5 months of being out of the hospital he was on the ice. A year ago he curled in 10 countries in only 11 days, including Canada, U.S., Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, and Liechtenstein.

Currently, Swan is in discussion with Guinness World Records to see if he can set a world record for curling in the most amount of countries in a certain time period.

For this season, his goal is to curl 100 games at 100 different rinks. So far Swan has plans to curl in P.E.I., Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, North Dakota, Minnesota and Maine. Swan also noted he doesn't have any financial sponsors, which has an impact on how much travelling he can do.

Part of Swan's love for curling lies in the inclusiveness of the sport. He noted curling can be done at any age, and he believes it to be the most social sport there is.

"This is the only sport out there that you can participate in at any age, for as long as you want, for a lifetime," he said, and recalls curling with a man who was 89 years old. "Although he didn't curl to the best of the ability, he was out there participating and participating in life, and that makes a difference."

"You cannot leave a curling facility without having made new friends," he added.

Swan noted he will continue curling at venues across the world for as long as possible.
