Seven Conserative MPs will travel across Canada, on what is being called the "Defend Local Jobs Tour," in search of ideas on how best to protect the economy and jobs suffering under the weight of recent tariffs imposed by the U.S.

"We want to get the best ideas from workers, businesses and local labour groups about how we can respond to this threat and protect local communities that are most vulnerable to these tariffs," said MP Candice Bergen's office in a news release.

The Portage-Lisgar MP is concerned about the success and well-being of companies in her riding that rely on steel and aluminum for their products, following the tough tariffs placed on the materials in June.

"We've got a lot of manufacturing here in the riding; a lot of smaller and larger companies that use different American products, whether it's steel and aluminum, and some Canadian products of the same type, in the manufacturing," she said. "Definitely we will be impacted by these tariffs, it will be a negative impact .... When a trade war starts like this it's the consumer, it's the workers that end up getting hurt."

Although Bergen is critical of the Liberal government's handling of the situation, she said it's important for parties to stick together during this brewing trade war.

"We (Conservatives) are going to keep trying to offer positive solutions and keep working with the Liberals and do the best we can for Canadian workers," she said.

MPs Lisa Raitt (Milton, Ont.), Gerard Deltell (Louis-Saint Laurent, Que.), Colin Carrie (Oshawa, Ont.), John Brassard (Barrie-Innisfil, Ont.), Erin O’Toole (Durham, Ont.), Randy Hoback (Prince Albert, Sask.), and Dean Allison (Niagara West-Glanbrook, Ont.) will embark on the Defend Local Jobs Tour from July through August.
