Municipal leaders will be gathering next week in Winnipeg for the Association of Manitoba Municipality's annual convention.

Civic leaders will deal with about 35 resolutions that touch on everything from property assessments and taxation to government downloading.

Rhonda Coupland is on the resolutions committee for AMM.

“We used to have like 100 resolutions and now we are down to 30 some so that shows a lot of the concerns around Manitoba are similar. Some of the big ones are cannabis, which is now legal, and where is the money going. The municipalities would definitely like a chunk of that.”

Conservation districts are getting new boundaries and there is a motion on the floor about that issue. “The motion is aimed at making any moves voluntary.”

Coupland points out the regular ones dealing with roads, bridges and infrastructure, in general, will be voted on by the delegates. She says many communities have infrastructure that is 50,60 or 70 years old so that is always an important topic with civic leaders.

“In the Westman region, there was a lot of discussion about not having to integrate mill rates to make them the same with rural and urban and in other parts of the province water issues are front and centre. Offloading of provincial responsibilities onto municipalities is another big one especially when it comes to roads that they don't want to pave anymore, so they pass it on to municipalities. Those are some important things AMM needs to fight for because this can't continue.”

Hundreds of elected officials will be in Winnipeg for the convention November 26-28.
