The Emerson-Franklin Tourism Committee is ready to plant fifty trees in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday. To mark the special occasion, federal government grants up to $5000 are being awarded to 150 tree-planting projects across the country.

Emerson-Franklin Tourism Committee received word in April that they are one of 150 projects to receive grant funding.

Committee president Wayne Arseny says rather than plant them all in one place they have decided to spread the trees out.

"We will plant fifty trees in groupings of two along the Trans Canada Trail starting in the Municipality Rhineland and ending in the Municipality of De Salaberry. All 25 locations have been strategically planned to connect the trees to the new Emerson-Franklin GPS system along the Roseau River so that people know about the history of the municipality they're in."

Arseny added that the land currently is a bit wet due to the late snowfall that hit the region in April.

"As soon as things dry up we will start to plant. The Grant is for about $4,000 and we are limited on the size of tree we can plant because of some of the remote locations. So they have to be big enough to be self- sustainable in the environment but small enough that we can still dig them in by hand," explained Arseny

He adds, the water that they will need to provide the young trees will have to be hauled to some remote locations by hand.
