Emerson MLA Cliff Graydon is not pleased with some of the changes being proposed to the boundaries of his constituency.

Under the Manitoba Electoral Boundaries Commission proposal, the northeastern section of the Emerson riding would be removed, which entails most of the Rural Municipality of De Salaberry.

To compensate for that loss of population, a large portion of the RM of Stanley and RM or Roland would be added onto the western side of the constituency

Graydon says some of the adjustments make sense, but he is concerned about how the RM of Montcalm is split in half with the northern portion absorbed by Morris constituency and southern part of the RM remaining in Emerson.

"In fact the community of St. Joseph would also be cut in half," said Graydon. "The mandate of the Boundaries Commission indicates that they wanted to follow municipal boundaries and didn't want to divide a community in half. So I have some issues with that option."

While Graydon would lose the northeast portion of his constituency under the plan, the Boundaries Commission would add more area to the northwest part of the riding by including a large portion of the RM of Roland and a greater area of the RM of Stanley.

"I do give them credit for trying to keep Stanley municipality and their local council in one riding," said Graydon.

MLAs and Manitobans, in general, will have a chance to express their concerns over the proposed electoral boundary changes at public hearings in September.

Only one public hearing has been scheduled for our region. That meeting will be held at the Quality Inn in Winkler on September 19, at 10 a.m.
