The official forecast from Environment Canada will be released at the end of the month, but they're expecting a colder than normal winter. The Weather Network and American forecasts are predicting above normal precipitation for the prairies along with the colder temperatures, but Environment Canada does not predict those trends. That's from Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang.

"So far Environment Canada for December, January and February is forecasting below normal temperatures, but we don't show a trend in precipitation at all across the prairies," says Lang. "Two out of the three models talk about more precipitation, and all three are talking about below normal temperatures."

Lang says things started out with a la Nada sea surface temperature off the coast of South America, which means neither colder nor warmer than usual. However, she explains, that changed and became a weak La Niña, which is the opposite of the warmer El Niño, making things a little colder this season.
