Extreme wind chill values of -40 to -45 are expected through much of Southern Manitoba this weekend, with not much relief in sight until Monday. Environment Canada tells us the coldest airmass of the season has flooded across the province. Temperatures of minus 30 or lower Saturday morning, combined with light northwest winds of 10 to 15 km/h, are producing these extreme windchill values today. An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect for much of Southern Manitoba.

Temperatures will only climb into the mid minus 20s Saturday afternoon, with wind chills in the minus 30s. Extreme wind chills of minus 40 to minus 45 are expected again Saturday night into Sunday morning as temperatures drop into the minus 30s once again. Relief from the cold snap is expected beginning Monday.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when wind chill values or temperatures are forecast to be minus 40 or colder. Frostbite is possible in 10 minutes or less in these conditions.

Residents are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing for the weather.

-Synthetic and wool fabrics provide better insulation. Some synthetic fabrics are designed to keep perspiration away from your body which keep you dry and further reduce your risk.
- Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer. You can remove layers if you get too warm (before you start sweating) or add a layer if you get cold.
- Wear warm socks, gloves, a hat and scarf in cold weather. Be sure to cover your nose to protect it.
- If you get wet, change into dry clothing as soon as possible. You lose heat faster when you're wet.
