Provencher MP Ted Falk says a lot of people are wondering what will happen this week and going forward, now that Canada's counter-tariffs on U.S. goods are in effect. Canada has imposed tariffs on a variety of goods effective July 1 in response to the recent U.S. decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium. Falk says there is a real concern about how these moves will affect consumers in terms of higher prices.

"That certainly is foremost in a lot of people's minds right now, especially business owners and workers and companies that do rely on cross-border trade. We're very concerned for middle class, working Canadians, that this will impact many of our business and it will impact their employment then too."

He says it will be very important that all Canadian political parties continue to present a united front in negotiating with the United States on these trade matters.

"As the Conservative Party, we are solidly committed to standing behind Canadians and we want to present a unified voice in these negotiations with the Liberal Government and also our NDP opponents, that we're putting the interests of Canadians and Canadian workers first and that's a priority for all the parties here in Canada."

The Canadian tariffs are specifically targeted at goods manufactured in the states of Republican congressmen and senators in an effort to apply pressure for them to remove tariffs and to agree to a revised North American Free Trade Agreement.
