A family escaped injury after waking to find their house on fire shortly before midnight Tuesday.

Winkler Fire Chief Richard Paetzold said they received a call to a structure fire at 11:38, near the U.S. border, on Road 21 near Haskett.  He said crews arrived to smoke coming from the main part of the home.

Fire fighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, and keep the structure standing, however the home did receive significant damage.

Paetzold said the family did go to hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation.

He noted the family was awoken by the sound of beeping, most likely a smoke alarm.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
