The first female police officers in the history of the Winkler Police Service are expected to start this year.

After 15 years of searching, Police Chief Rick Hiebert says they're pleased to announce two of the three recent hires are female.

"Just overall you want a balance in your police service," Hiebert says. "We're so excited."

Kendra Derksen and Megan Fallis along with Travis Krahn have accepted offers for employment.

Derksen and Krahn are both Winkler natives.

"It's always nice to see local kids grow up here and aspire to join their police service," Hiebert says.

All three will begin attending the Saskatchewan Police College at the end of July and are expected to start in Winkler in December.

Police Board Chair Henry Siemens explains two of the new members were hired due to the retirements of Brad Kehler and Ray Friesen. The third hire is a result of city council's approval earlier this year for an added officer.
