When it comes to Canada Day, Canadians are celebrating in a multitude of ways. For Winkler resident Dave Goertzen that involves flying a massive 30 ft Canadian flag in his front yard.

Goertzen says he's always been fascinated by flags; before his retirement from teaching, he would hang around 100 to 150 flags throughout his classroom. However, none would compare to this behemoth.

While his fascination for flags comes from his love of travel, Goertzen says his favourite place in the world is Canada.

"I've lived in many different countries in the world, I've been to 38 and I've lived in maybe six or eight of them. Canada to me is the number one country, I'm happy I'm from Canada there are so many good things about it. When Canada day comes along I want to celebrate it."

Goertzen will fly the flag a couple days before and after Canada Day, explaining it's one unique way to celebrate Canada's Confederacy. He notes he obtained the flag back in 2004-2005 from a business and repaired it himself.

He says many have stopped as they passed the home on Salem Cresent to take pictures of the sight.

The flag is put up using a little bit of ingenuity, attaching a rope to a shoe and throwing it over a branch, connecting a pulley afterwards to raise the flag.
