A former Morden Mayor has stated his intentions to run for office in Winnipeg.

Doug Wilson is making a bid for Mayor of Winnipeg in the upcoming municipal elections.

Wilson was elected Mayor in Morden in 2006 and served until 2010. Since then he has also graced a number of local stages as an accomplished saxophonist.

He explains becoming involved in politics in Morden was originally in response to being asked by local residents.

"It wasn't an aspiration, I was asked to run... so I did," he says, adding it set him on a rewarding path.

"I shaped the community with the help of the community," Wilson says.

His time as Mayor of Morden was formative, he explains, adding it cemented the principle of giving careful attention to even the smallest details.

Like Morden, Wilson says Winnipeg is a jewel, "most beautiful capital in Canada."

Wilson plans on waiting until May 4 to reveal his full campaign platform.
