Don't eat the mushrooms you find in the woods, some can be incredibly dangerous.

There's no rule-of-thumb to identifying edible fungi as was taught during the most recent nature talk held by A Rocha: Pembina Valley Interpretive Centre. The talk, led by Dr. Diana Bizecki Robson, a botanist from the Manitoba Museum, was all about fungi.

"It awoke my sense of wonder," he added.

Nature talks are meant to cover a plethora of topics, according to Fox, particularly focusing on biology, ecosystems, etc. Mushrooms were a novel topic which many people don't understand well.

Dr. Bizecki Robson shared a list of mushrooms common to Manitoba, along with some more rare species.

Approximately 30 people attended the session.

Nature talks like this are held once a month during the winter to give people access to the interpretive centre when it's difficult to access and to engage the community.

"They're a way to get people thinking about the world, nature, creation, and how we connect with that," said Fox.
