The garbage bag limit in Winkler could be going down to one.

By 2018 Winkler City Council would like to see the Waste Reduction Task Force's plan to reduce the residential garbage bag limit from two, to a single bag per week.

"We look at what surrounding communities are doing, and we want to figure out what works best for Winkler," Winkler Mayor Martin Harder says.

However, the city is also looking at providing complimentary bag tags for occassions like Christmas when additional garbage bags could be needed.

The city is also purchasing 4,000 compost bins for residents to divert food waste from the dump.

"It'll make a significant difference to the weight of garbage going out," Harder says. "If it's properly handled it will be easy to get to used to."

He notes the 2.5 gallon bucket comes with a lid and should fit under the average sink, helping make composting a part of Winkler residents' everyday routine.

"It's really a habit we need to get into."

The task force has also proposed privatizing commercial garbage collection.

"Commercial construction waste is huge," Harder says. "It's important the commercial entities get involved in this as well as residential."
