The annual Genesis House fundraising Swing for Safety Golf Tournament took place Friday in Miami.

Ang BraunGenesis House Executive Director Ang Braun said they really felt the support through this event.  "It's so important that we have the support, and the people we serve feel the support through these events," said Braun.

Braun said events like the golf tournament and others they run throughout the year play a big part in keeping the shelter running.  She said these events are an important way to help keep their doors open, noting their core budget has remained stagnant for the last decade.  She said without the annual fundraisers they run and the general donations they receive, they would not be about to operate.

As much as events like the golf tournament are an important way to raise money to keep their doors open, they're also important to draw awareness to the issue of domestic abuse.

"I think we've been saying it for awhile, and I think the community is really picking up on it, that domestic violence is not an issue for woman, it's not an issue just for the shelter. It's actually a community issue," said Braun.  "Each and everyone of us has a responsibility to be aware, and to be aware of language and what's happening around us, and be willing to speak up when we see something."

The final number has not yet been calculated, however, Braun estimates the golf tournament will raise in excess of $5,000.
