Growing Up Green is a parent-child program organized by the Altona and Area Family Resource Centre that allows families to learn while embracing nature.

The outdoor program encourages families to bond with each other and the environment through activities and story readings. It's been proven that early learning involving nature contributes to excellent child development
 in health and well being.

Nina Edbom-Kehler, coordinator at the centre, said there is a lot of value in the program.

"[The kids learn] how to be outside, what they can do outside and the different things outside can offer, as well as the green part about recycling," she said.

She also said it is important for families to spend time together, and the program is a great way to do so without the hassle of cleaning up or worrying about what to make for dinner.

Incidentally, Edbom-Kehler said the program has received a positive response even though it is only on its second year.

“Last year we had a waiting list and this year too we had a good response,” she said.

The program is free, but requires all hopeful participants to pre-register because space is limited.

Since the organization is non-profit, all funding comes from grants and personal business donations.

While the resource centre is closing down for the summer, Edbom-Kehler said they are gearing up for some exciting events for next year as it is the centre's 20th anniversary.
